Song-writer and musician Kernel Roberts, son of the late calypsonian Aldwyn Roberts, better known as Lord Kitchener, is pleased about the renaming of the auditorium at the National Academy of Performing Arts (NAPA) in his father's name. From today it will be known as the Aldwyn Roberts, Lord Kitchener Auditorium. "My entire family is honoured by this tribute to my father, and added to my emotional response I find it fitting that it is on the same grounds (Princess Building) where my father had his Calypso Revue Tent," said Kernel.

He said he was overwhelmed by the renaming of the auditorium which he described as not just a celebration of his father but also a celebration of local culture. He praised the Government's decision and said it (Government) displayed a serious attitude when it came to culture. Roberts said he looked forward to today's ceremony and reiterated his joy and appreciation for the renaming. Quweina Roberts, daughter of Lord Kitchener, was happy the Government had chosen to celebrate her father in that way.

"After so many years have passed, they have chosen to recognise daddy's contribution to culture and our heritage in a place where his tent previously stood," she said. She applauded the efforts of the Ministry of Arts and Multiculturalism but hoped the ministry, in future, would not wait to celebrate cultural icons posthumously. She stressed that T&T was rich in cultural icons in various genres and hoped they too would be recognised. A ceremony will be held this morning to celebrate the renaming of the auditorium.
