ARIMA Mayor Ghassan Youseph has urged the Government to set up the Kitchener Academy for the Performing Arts (KAPA) in Arima.

In declaring the Calypso Revue open on Friday night at the Arima Velodrome, the Mayor called on the Ministry of the Arts and Mutliculturalism to realise this dream for the people of Arima and in honour of the late Grandmaster Lord Kitchener.

He said Port of Spain has NAPA, San Feranando SAPA, and it is time that Arima gets its very own KAPA.

He paid tribute to Kitchener and his creation of the Calypso Revue, which he said has left a huge legacy, not only a large repertoire of original compositions, including many of the most famous calypsoes and road marches, but also a cast of talented bards whom he mentored and who are still with his calypso tent.

He recalled it was some 50 years ago that Kitchener launched his Calypso Revue in his hometown Arima, which has grown to become one of the premier calypso tents in the country.

"In paying homage to the great calypsonian, the current management of the Calypso Revue has continued his tradition of launching the Calypso Revue's Carnival season in Arima," he said.

Judging from the cast, Calypso Revue seems set to have sell-out audiences for the season, as all the calypsonians were up to the high standards set by the veterans in the tent.

The sellout crowd at the Arima Velodrome was treated to a wide variety of political commentary and humourous ditties.

Veterans of the tent, Sugar Aloes, Pink Panther, Skatie, Devon Seales and Bally, drew encores with their compositions.
