Quwenia Roberts, daughter of the late great Lord Kitchener (Aldwyn Roberts), paid tribute to her father as she was featured in a session with Pelham Goddard and Roots last Thursday at the Mas Camp Pub in Woodbrook, during Caribbean Night. It was an impromptu session but then most of what happened at the camp that night was impromptu by nature.

Quwenia and her mother, Valerie Green, were at the camp celebrating the Grandmaster's 91st birthday when they were asked to judge a competition involving members of the audience. The two female entrants had the entire camp singing along with them as they went through a verse and chorus of two of Kitchener's songs. It was then the tributes to Kitchener began, first up was former groovy soca monarch Kees Dieffenthaller who just dropped in with a friend from Canada. He performed "Bees Melody".

The 2012 Calypso Monarch Duane O'Connor was up next with "The Road". Roots was also celebrating the birthdays of veteran musician Roy Cape, Tony Vosin and Carl Jacobs. So Quwenia then came to the stage to do a song in tribute to Carl Jacobs. The young lady "aced" the vocals and was given a thunderous round of applause. She continued on stage with Roots for its session doing "Carnival Baby" among other songs like "Bacchanal Lady". David Bereaux, the official guest performer then did "Margie" and "Rainorama".

Just when you felt the evening was coming back to normal, there was yet another surprise. Carol and Carly (Trini) Jacobs along with Olatunji walked through the door. The mother and daughter duo were called upon to perform a song and they obliged. Carol did lead vocals on "Pressure" while Trini and Quwenia did background vocals. After the performance it was Roots turn to continue with its session but that too was interrupted by shouts of "Super, Super" as the reigning Soca Monarch and Road March champion walked in on the session. Strange enough Roots next song was "Party" by SuperBlue but he kept his composure and did not jump on stage. He waited until Pelham Goddard and Roots ended its session. He was then introduced as a very special guest and put the audience through 30 minutes of his hits culmuniating with his mega song "Fantastic Friday". The Caribbean Night proved to be the best of the three installments in more ways than one. It was not just the music but the vibes of the audience and the guest performers who all sang songs from the pen of Lord Kitchener on his birthday in the presence of his wife and daughter.

Both Valerie and Quwiena were also at the Mas Camp for the Wednesday night calypso concert where Sugar Aloes, King Luta, Crazy and the Regeneration Now performed songs in honour of the Great Lord Kitchener.
