  • 1962 - Independence from Britian.
  • 1970 - Black Power demonstrations cause brief state of emergency.
  • 1976 - Republic within the Commonwealth.
  • 1980 - The Tobago House of Assembly established, internal autonomy 1987.
  • 1981 - Dr. Eric Williams dies after being Head of Government (as Chief Minister and Prime Minister) for 25 years.
  • 1988 - Baseo Panday dismissed from cabinet; forms left wing UNC.
  • 1990 - Prime Minister taken hostage in failed fundamentalist coup.
  • 2010 - Mrs. Kamla Persad-Bissessar was sworn in on May 26, 2010 as the country's first female Prime Minister for Trinidad and Tobago
  • 2024 - Prime Minister Dr Keith Rowley made an announcement at a Post Cabinet Media Briefing at Whitehall (Thu. 18 Aril 2024) that Emancipation Day (1st August) will be renamed to African Emancipation Day.
  • note #1: In the late 18th century both Trinidad and Tobago were cultivated and effectively administered by the French, under an agreement with the Spanish. It was during this period that the French started the plantation system on both islands and began importing the requisite slave labor.
